Career Summary

Jerry Burns was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1966 to 1991, finishing his career as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Over his twenty-six years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 231-150-3. He was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 1986 until the 1991 season, during which time the Vikings went 52-43-0. During his career he was a head coach for six seasons.

Career Awards

During his time as head coach and offensive coordinator he coached five players to award-winning seasons. As the offensive coordinator for the Vikings Fran Tarkenton won AP Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player, Sammy White won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Chuck Foreman won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. As the head coach for the Vikings Keith Millard won AP Defensive Player of the Year and Tommy Kramer won Comeback Player of the Year.

Before he was a head coach, Burns served as an assistant coach for Vince Lombardi, Bud Grant, and Les Steckel. Seventeen of these years were spent on Grant's coaching staff. During his time as head coach, two assistant coaches, (Pete Carroll and Marc Trestman) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 183-139-1 in the regular season and 11-11 in the playoffs during their twenty seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs. The coaching tree has won a single championship, in 2013 by the Seattle Seahawks, led by Pete Carroll.

Burns was born on Monday, January 24, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan. He died on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at the age of 94.
