Career Summary
Jim Hanifan was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1973 to 2002, finishing his career as the offensive line coach of the St. Louis Rams. Over his twenty-nine years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 218-226-2. He was the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1980 until the 1985 season, during which time the Cardinals went 39-49-1. During his career he was a head coach for six seasons. He was fired from the Cardinals on Sunday, December 21, 1986.

Before he was a head coach, Hanifan served as an assistant coach for Don Coryell, Bud Wilkinson, Marion Campbell, Joe Gibbs, Richie Petitbon, Norv Turner, Dick Vermeil, and Mike Martz. Six of these years were spent on Coryell's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Rod Dowhower, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Jim Hanifan's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 8-24-0 and 0-0 in the playoffs.

Hanifan was born on Thursday, September 21, 1933 in Compton, California. He died on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at the age of 87.
