Biography
Career Summary
Marion Campbell was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1962 to 1989, finishing his career as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Over his twenty-seven years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 179-202-11. During his career he was a head coach for eight seasons, first with the Atlanta Falcons. He led the Falcons for two seasons, compiling a record of 8-20-0. His next head coaching stint was with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1983 to 1985, as he led the team to a 18-29-1 record. He was fired from the Eagles on Monday, December 16, 1985. His third head coach placement began in 1987 with the Atlanta Falcons. He coached them for three seasons and the team had a 11-36-0 record during his tenure. He resigned from the Falcons on Tuesday, November 28, 1989. During his entire head coaching career, his three teams combined for a record of 37-85-1 across eight seasons.
Career Awards
During the 1975 season as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons he coached Dave Hampton to the Comeback Player of the Year.
Marion Campbell Coaching Tree
Before he was a head coach, Campbell served as an assistant coach for Mike Holovak, Norm Van Brocklin, George Allen, and Dick Vermeil. Nine of these years were spent on Brocklin's coaching staff. During his time as head coach, three assistant coaches, (Frank Gansz, Tom Coughlin, and Al Groh) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 187-179-1 in the regular season and 12-7 in the playoffs during their twenty-three seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs. The coaching tree has combined for two championships, most recently in 2011 by the New York Giants, led by Tom Coughlin.
