Career Summary
Rod Dowhower was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1973 to 2001, finishing his career as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles. Over his twenty-one years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 153-170-3. He was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 1985 until the 1986 season, during which time the Colts went 8-24-0. During his career he was a head coach for two seasons.

During the 1985 season as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts he coached Duane Bickett to the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

During this time, he coached for three years for Marion Campbell, Joe Gibbs, and Andy Reid. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Brad Childress, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Rod Dowhower's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for five seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 39-35-0 and 1-2 in the playoffs.
