Charlie Sumner was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1963 to 1990, finishing his career as the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. Over his twenty-seven years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 212-178-4.

As the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots he coached one player to an award-winning season: Mike Haynes, AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1976.
