Career Summary
John Fox was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1989 to 2023, finishing his career as the senior defensive assistant coach of the Detroit Lions. Over his thirty-one years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 260-236-2. During his career he was a head coach for sixteen seasons, first with the Carolina Panthers. He led the Panthers for nine seasons, compiling a record of 73-71-0. He was fired from the Panthers on Friday, December 31, 2010. His next head coaching stint was with the Denver Broncos from 2011 to 2014, as he led the team to a 46-18-0 record. He was fired from the Broncos on Monday, January 12, 2015. His third head coach placement began in 2015 with the Chicago Bears. He coached them for three seasons and the team had a 14-34-0 record during his tenure. He was fired from the Bears on Monday, January 1, 2018. During his entire head coaching career, his three teams combined for a record of 133-123-0 across sixteen seasons including going 8-7-0 in the playoffs.
Career Awards
During his time as defensive coordinator and head coach he coached five players to award-winning seasons. As the defensive coordinator for the Giants Michael Strahan won AP Defensive Player of the Year. As the head coach for the Broncos Peyton Manning won AP Offensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, and Most Valuable Player and Von Miller won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. As the head coach for the Panthers Steve Smith won Comeback Player of the Year and Julius Peppers won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
