The Carolina Panthers' eighth season was in 2002, playing their home games at Ericsson Stadium. During the offseason they hired John Fox to lead the team. Fox previously was the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants and had thirteen years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the season 7-9-0, 4-4-0 at home and 3-5-0 on the road. At the end of the season, Julius Peppers was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
