The San Francisco 49ers' thirty-third season was in 1978, playing their home games at Candlestick Park. During the offseason they hired Pete McCulley to lead the team. McCulley previously was the wide receivers coach of the Washington Redskins and had five years of coaching experience in the NFL. He was fired from the 49ers on Monday, October 30, 1978. They finished the season 2-14-0, 2-6-0 at home and 0-8-0 on the road.
