1978 was the forty-ninth season for the Detroit Lions. During the offseason they hired Monte Clark to lead the team. During his time in the NFL he was head coach for one year. They finished the season 7-9-0, 5-3-0 at home and 2-6-0 on the road. At the conclusion of the season Al Baker was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
