The Houston Oilers' nineteenth season was in 1978, and it was the fourth season Bum Phillips served as the head coach of the team. They finished the year 10-6-0 in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs, eventually losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-5. At the end of the season Earl Campbell earned AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and AP Offensive Player of the Year.
