Career Summary
Bill Austin was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1959 to 1985, finishing his career as the offensive line coach of the New York Jets. Over his twenty-four years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 177-150-8. During his career he was a head coach for four seasons, first with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He led the Steelers for three seasons, compiling a record of 11-28-3. His next head coaching stint was with the Washington Redskins for the 1970 season, leading the team to a 6-8-0 record. During his entire head coaching career, his two teams combined for a record of 17-36-3 across four seasons.

Before he was a head coach, Austin served as an assistant coach for Vince Lombardi, Harland Svare, Jim Dooley, Bob Hollway, George Allen, Ray Perkins, and Joe Walton. Seven of these years were spent on Lombardi's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Mike McCormack, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Bill Austin's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Colts for five seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 25-48-1 and 0-0 in the playoffs.

Austin was born on Thursday, October 18, 1928 in San Pedro, California. He died on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the age of 84.
