The New Orleans Saints' fifth season was in 1971, playing their home games at Tulane Stadium. During the offseason they promoted J.D. Roberts to lead the team. Roberts previously was the interim head coach of the New Orleans Saints and had three years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the season 4-8-2, 2-4-1 at home and 2-4-1 on the road.
