The Los Angeles Rams' thirty-sixth season was in 1971, playing their home games at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. During the offseason they hired Tommy Prothro to lead the team. Prothro had never previously coached in the NFL in any capacity before the 1971 season. They finished the season 8-5-1, 4-2-1 at home and 4-3-0 on the road. At the end of the season, Isiah Robertson was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
