1971 was the twelfth season for the Houston Oilers. During the offseason they hired Ed Hughes to lead the team. Hughes previously was the backs coach/chief of offense of the San Francisco 49ers and has a total of eleven years of coaching in the AFL and NFL. They finished the season 4-9-1, 3-3-1 at home and 1-6-0 on the road.
