The Houston Oilers' twelfth season was in 1971, playing their home games at Reliant Astrodome. During the offseason they hired Ed Hughes to lead the team. Hughes previously was the backs coach/chief of offense of the San Francisco 49ers and had eleven years of coaching experience in the AFL and NFL. They finished the season 4-9-1, 3-3-1 at home and 1-6-0 on the road.
