The Washington Redskins' fortieth season was in 1971, playing their home games at RFK Stadium. During the offseason they hired George Allen to lead the team. During his time in the NFL he was head coach for five years. They finished the year 9-4-1 in the regular season but they lost their first playoff game to the San Francisco 49ers 24-20. At the end of the season, George Allen was awarded with the Coach of the Year award.
