The San Francisco 49ers' fifty-second season was in 1997, playing their home games at 3Com Park. During the offseason they hired Steve Mariucci to lead the team. Mariucci previously was the quarterbacks coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1995 and has a total of five years of coaching in the NFL. They finished the year 13-3-0 in the regular season, en route to winning the NFC West, and 1-1 in the playoffs, eventually losing to the Green Bay Packers 23-10. At the end of the season, Dana Stubblefield was awarded with the AP Defensive Player of the Year award.
