1997 was the fifty-second season for the San Francisco 49ers. During the offseason they hired Steve Mariucci to lead the team. Mariucci previously was the quarterbacks coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1995 and has a total of five years of coaching in the NFL. They finished the season 13-3-0 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs eventually losing to the Green Bay Packers 23-10. At the conclusion of the season Dana Stubblefield was awarded with the AP Defensive Player of the Year.
