Biography

Charley Winner was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1966 until 1979, finishing his career with the Cincinnati Bengals as their defensive backs (secondary) coach. Over his thirteen years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative record of 91-89-6. During his career he was a head coach for seven seasons. His first head coaching opportunity came with the St. Louis Cardinals. He led the team for five seasons, compiling a record of 35-30-5. His next head coaching stint came with the New York Jets. He coached the Jets from 1974 to 1975, leading the team to a 10-18-0 record during his two seasons as head coach. During the 1974 season as the head coach of the New York Jets he coached Joe Namath to the Comeback Player of the Year.
