Career Summary
Bill Johnson was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1955 to 1990, finishing his career as the tight ends coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. Over his thirty-six years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 245-257-8. He was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals from 1976 until the 1978 season, during which time the Bengals went 22-22-0. During his career he was a head coach for three seasons.

Before he was a head coach, Johnson served as an assistant coach for Norman "Red" Strader, Frankie Albert, Red Hickey, Jack Christiansen, Paul Brown, John McKay, Monte Clark, and Sam Wyche. Eight of these years were spent on Brown's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Homer Rice, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Bill Johnson's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for one season where he combined for a regular season record of 4-12-0 and 0-0 in the playoffs.
