Biography

Career Summary

Jim Lee Howell was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1954 to 1986, finishing his career as the consultant/special scout of the New York Giants. Over his thirty-three years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 219-230-10. He was the head coach of the New York Giants from 1954 until the 1960 season, during which time the Giants went 53-27-4. During his career he was a head coach for seven seasons. In 1956, the Giants won the championship against the Chicago Bears 47-7.

Before he was a head coach, Howell served as an assistant coach for Ray Perkins and Bill Parcells. Four of these years were spent on Parcells' coaching staff. During his time as head coach, four assistant coaches, (Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Allie Sherman, and Harland Svare) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 421-282-19 in the regular season and 29-20 in the playoffs during their fifty-one seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs. The coaching tree has combined for seven championships, most recently in 1977 by the Dallas Cowboys, led by Tom Landry.

Howell was born on Sunday, September 27, 1914 in Lonoke, Arkansas. He died on Wednesday, January 4, 1995 at the age of 80.
