Career Summary
Harry Gilmer was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1957 to 1982, finishing his career as the quarterbacks coach of the St. Louis Cardinals. Over his twenty-six years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 157-188-14. He was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 1965 until the 1966 season, during which time the Lions went 10-16-2. During his career he was a head coach for two seasons.

Before he was a head coach, Gilmer served as an assistant coach for Buddy Parker, Norm Van Brocklin, Charley Winner, Don Coryell, Bud Wilkinson, and Jim Hanifan. Nine of these years were spent on Brocklin's coaching staff. During his time as head coach, two assistant coaches, (John North and Joe Schmidt) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league.
