Career Summary

Herman Edwards was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1989 to 2008, finishing his career as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Over his twenty years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 171-148-1. During his career he was a head coach for eight seasons, first with the New York Jets. He led the Jets for five seasons, compiling a record of 39-41-0. He was fired from the Jets. His next head coaching stint was with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006 to 2008, as he led the team to a 15-33-0 record. He was fired from the Chiefs on Friday, January 23, 2009. During his entire head coaching career, his two teams combined for a record of 54-74-0 across eight seasons including going 2-4-0 in the playoffs.

Career Awards

During the 2004 season as the head coach of the New York Jets he coached Jonathan Vilma to the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Herman Edwards Coaching Tree

Before he was a head coach, Edwards served as an assistant coach for Marty Schottenheimer and Tony Dungy. Five of these years were spent on Dungy's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Doug Marrone, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Herman Edwards's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars for six seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 37-59-0 and 2-1 in the playoffs.
