2004 was the forty-fifth season for the New York Jets and the third season for Herman Edwards as the head coach of the Jets. They finished the season 10-6-0 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs eventually losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-17. At the conclusion of the season Jonathan Vilma was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
