2008 was the forty-third season for the Atlanta Falcons. During the offseason they hired Mike Smith to lead the team. Smith previously was the defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars and has a total of nine years of coaching in the NFL. They finished the season 11-5-0 in the regular season. However, they lost their first playoff game to the Arizona Cardinals 30-24. At the conclusion of the season one different people were recognized for their successful seasons: Matt Ryan, AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player.
