Career Summary
Mike Smith was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1999 to 2018, finishing his career as the defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over his nineteen years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 167-137-0. He was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2008 until the 2014 season, during which time the Falcons went 66-46-0. During his career he was a head coach for seven seasons. He was fired from the Falcons on Monday, December 29, 2014. At the time of his firing, Smith was the most successful coach in Falcons franchise history.
Career Awards
Smith won the NFL's Coach of the Year award in 2008 after guiding the Falcons to a 11-5-0 record and a a berth in the playoffs. During the 2008 season as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons he coached Matt Ryan to the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Before he was a head coach, Smith served as an assistant coach for Brian Billick, Jack Del Rio, and Dirk Koetter. Five of these years were spent on Del Rio's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Dirk Koetter, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Mike Smith's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 19-29-0 and 0-0 in the playoffs.
