1988 was the twenty-first season for the Cincinnati Bengals and the fourth season for Sam Wyche as the head coach of the Bengals. They finished the season 12-4-0 in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs eventually losing to the San Francisco 49ers 20-16. At the conclusion of the season Boomer Esiason was awarded with the Most Valuable Player.
