Career Summary
Monte Clark was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1970 to 1998, finishing his career as the special adviser to the team of the Detroit Lions. Over his sixteen years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 132-101-2. During his career he was a head coach for eight seasons, first with the San Francisco 49ers. He led the 49ers for one season, compiling a record of 8-6-0. His next head coaching stint was with the Detroit Lions from 1978 to 1984, as he led the team to a 43-61-1 record. During his entire head coaching career, his two teams combined for a record of 51-67-1 across eight seasons including going 0-2-0 in the playoffs.

As the head coach of the Detroit Lions he coached two players to award-winning seasons: Al Baker, AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1978; Billy Sims, AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1980.
Monte Clark Coaching Tree
Before he was a head coach, Clark served as an assistant coach for Don Shula and Bobby Ross. Seven of these years were spent on Shula's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Marty Schottenheimer, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Monte Clark's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, and San Diego Chargers for twenty seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 196-122-1 and 5-13 in the playoffs.

Clark was born on Sunday, January 24, 1937 in Kingsburg, California. He died on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the age of 72.
