2005 was the eighty-sixth season for the Chicago Bears and the first season for Lovie Smith as the head coach of the Bears. They finished the season 11-5-0 in the regular season. However, they lost their first playoff game to the Carolina Panthers 29-21. At the conclusion of the season two different people were recognized for their successful seasons: Lovie Smith, Coach of the Year and Brian Urlacher, AP Defensive Player of the Year.
