Career Summary

Jim Harbaugh was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 2002 to 2014, finishing his career as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Over his six years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 59-36-1. He was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 until the 2014 season, during which time the 49ers went 44-19-1. During his career he was a head coach for four seasons. He was fired from the 49ers on Sunday, December 28, 2014. Harbaugh was forced out after four seasons with the team. Harbaugh became the head coach of his alma mater, the Michigan Wolverines, after his departure from the 49ers. Harbaugh will return to the NFL sidelines as the new head coach of the Chargers. Last season, he led the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship.

Career Awards

Harbaugh won the NFL's Coach of the Year award in 2011 after guiding the 49ers to a 13-3-0 record and a a berth in the playoffs.

Before he was a head coach, Harbaugh served as an assistant coach for Bill Callahan. He spent two years as an assistant coach to Bill Callahan, finishing as the quarterbacks coach in 2003. During his time as head coach, two assistant coaches, (Jim Tomsula and Vic Fangio) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 24-41-0 in the regular season and 0-0 in the playoffs during their four seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs.

Playing Career

He was drafted in the first round with the twenty-sixth pick in the 1987 draft to play quarterback for the Bears.

Personal Information

Harbaugh was born on Monday, December 23, 1963 in Toledo, Ohio. Jim and John were the first pair of brothers to both serve as head coaches in the NFL and coached against each other in Super Bowl XLVII in 2013. Harbaugh has seven children, three sons from his first marriage and two daughters and two sons from his second marriage.
