1983 was the fifty-second season for the Washington Redskins and the second season for Joe Gibbs as the head coach of the Redskins. They finished the season 14-2-0 in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs eventually losing to the Los Angeles Raiders 38-9. At the conclusion of the season two different people were recognized for their successful seasons: Joe Gibbs, Coach of the Year and Joe Theismann, AP Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player.
