Career Summary
Kay Stephenson was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1978 to 1985, finishing his career as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. Over his eight years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 49-72-0. He was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 1983 until the 1985 season, during which time the Bills went 12-36-0. During his career he was a head coach for three seasons.

Before he was a head coach, Stephenson served as an assistant coach for Chuck Knox. He spent five years as an assistant coach to Chuck Knox, finishing as the quarterbacks coach in 1982. During his time as head coach, four assistant coaches, (Jerry Glanville, Pete Carroll, Hank Bullough, and Dick Jauron) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 293-277-1 in the regular season and 14-16 in the playoffs during their thirty-six seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs. The coaching tree has won a single championship, in 2013 by the Seattle Seahawks, led by Pete Carroll.
