Career Summary
Howard Schnellenberger was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1970 to 1978, finishing his career as the offensive pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach/offensive assistant coach of the Miami Dolphins. Over his nine years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 77-50-1. He was the head coach of the Baltimore Colts from 1973 until the 1974 season, during which time the Colts went 6-22-0. During his career he was a head coach for two seasons.
Howard Schnellenberger Coaching Tree
Before he was a head coach, Schnellenberger served as an assistant coach for Don Shula. He spent seven years as an assistant coach to Don Shula, finishing as the offensive pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach/offensive assistant coach in 1978. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Pete McCulley, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Howard Schnellenberger's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers for one season where he combined for a regular season record of 1-8-0 and 0-0 in the playoffs.
