Biography
Career Summary
Walt Kiesling was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1937 to 1961, finishing his career as the assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over his twenty-five years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 113-164-11. He was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1939 until the 1956 season, during which time the Pirates went 23-42-3. During his career he was a head coach for six seasons.
Kiesling was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966 after his playing career.

Before he was a head coach, Kiesling served as an assistant coach for Johnny McNally, Bert Bell, Greasy Neale, Curly Lambeau, John Michelosen, Joe Bach, and Buddy Parker. Five of these years were spent on Parker's coaching staff. During his time as head coach, three assistant coaches, (Jim Leonard, Nick Skorich, and Bill McPeak) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 68-102-8 in the regular season and 0-2 in the playoffs during their thirteen seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs.

Kiesling was born on Wednesday, May 27, 1903 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He died on Friday, March 2, 1962 at the age of 58.
