The Oakland Raiders' thirty-ninth season was in 1998, playing their home games at Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum. During the offseason they hired Jon Gruden to lead the team. Gruden previously was the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles and had seven years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the season 8-8-0, 4-4-0 at home and 4-4-0 on the road. At the end of the season, Charles Woodson was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
