1998 was the thirty-ninth season for the Oakland Raiders. During the offseason they hired Jon Gruden to lead the team. Gruden previously was the wide receivers coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1994 and has a total of four years of coaching in the NFL. They finished the season 8-8-0, 4-4-0 at home and 4-4-0 on the road. At the conclusion of the season Charles Woodson was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
