Career Summary
Phil Bengtson was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1951 to 1972, finishing his career as the interim head coach of the New England Patriots. Over his twenty-two years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 175-118-9. He was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1968 until the 1970 season, during which time the Packers went 20-21-1. During his career he was a head coach for three seasons.

Before he was a head coach, Bengtson served as an assistant coach for Lawrence "Buck" Shaw, Norman "Red" Strader, Frankie Albert, Vince Lombardi, Sid Gillman, and John Mazur. Nine of these years were spent on Lombardi's coaching staff. One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Forrest Gregg, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Phil Bengtson's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and Green Bay Packers for eleven seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 75-85-1 and 2-2 in the playoffs.

Bengtson was born on Thursday, July 17, 1913 in Roseau, Minnesota. He died on Sunday, December 18, 1994 at the age of 81.
