The San Francisco 49ers' first season was in 1946, playing their home games at Kezar Stadium. During the offseason they hired Lawrence "Buck" Shaw to lead the team. Shaw had never previously coached in the AAFC in any capacity before the 1946 season. They finished the season 9-5-0, 5-2-0 at home and 4-3-0 on the road.
