The San Diego Chargers' twenty-seventh season was in 1986, and it was the ninth season Don Coryell served as the head coach of the team. The Chargers played their home games at Jack Murphy Stadium. He resigned from the Chargers on Thursday, October 30, 1986. They finished the season 4-12-0, 2-6-0 at home and 2-6-0 on the road. At the end of the season, Leslie O'Neal was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
