The San Diego Chargers' twenty-eighth season was in 1987, playing their home games at Jack Murphy Stadium. During the offseason they promoted Al Saunders to lead the team. Saunders previously was the interim head coach/assistant head coach of the San Diego Chargers and had four years of coaching experience in the NFL.
