Playing Career
University of Massachusetts
Brian Smith played college football at Massachusetts from 1997-2000. In 1998, the university won the national championship. He started three years, including the national championship season, for the Minutemen at strong safety and cornerback, eventually earning All-Atlantic 10 honors his senior season.

After his playing career ended, Smith began his coaching career at his alma mater. Originally hired in 2004 to coach the linebackers but moved to the wide receivers coach for the 2005 and 2006 season.
NFL Coaching
New York Jets
In 2007, Smith began his NFL coaching career for the New York Jets under head coach Eric Mangini. Hired in 2007 as the offensive quality control coach for two seasons. Under new head coach Rex Ryan, he was moved to defensive quality control coach for the 2009 season before working as a defensive intern for the 2010 season. During the first two seasons under Ryan, the Jets made back-to-back appearances in the AFC Championship game.
Smith moved back to the defensive quality control coach for the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the 8-8 and 6-10 as the Jets missed the playoffs both seasons. In 2013 he was promoted to assistant defensive backs coach. In his new role, he helped oversee the development of first round cornerback Dee Milliner who won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month the final month of the season. In 2014, the Jets finished 4-12, the team's worst finish since 2007.
Philadelphia Eagles
In 2015, Smith was hired by Chip Kelly as the assistant linebackers coach for the Eagles. He assisted coaching the linebackers with Bill McGovern and Zack Minter (outside and inside linebackers coaches, respectively).
