Playing Career
College Career
Colorado State University
Joey Porter played college football at Colorado State University from 1995-1998. Initially playing on offense his freshman and sophomore seasons, he moved to defense his junior season. Despite only playing two seasons on defense, he ranks fifth overall at the school in sacks in a career.
NFL Career
Pittsburgh Steelers
In 1999, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Porter in the third round of the NFL draft. He played eight seasons total with the Steelers, helping the Steelers win Super Bowl XL during his time with the team. The 60 sacks that he accumulated during his eight seasons rank fifth overall in franchise history. He was released from the team following the 2006 season.
Miami Dolphins
After his eight seasons with the Steelers, Porter signed a free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins. While he struggled through his first season with the team, only registering 5.5 sacks (his lowest since 2003), he rebounded in 2008 with a career-high 17.5 sacks. He struggled during the 2009 season, eventually being suspended by the team for a game for undisclosed reasons. He was released after the season.
Arizona Cardinals
Porter finished his career with the Arizona Cardinals after signing a free agent contract with them following the 2009 season. However, in his second season with the Cardinals, he only played in six games and retired at the end of the season.

Colorado State University
In 2013 Porter began his coaching career at Colorado State University as an undergraduate student assistant coach while he attended the university to finish his liberal arts degree.
NFL Coaching
In 2014, Porter was hired by his original NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers and his former head coach Mike Tomlin as a defensive assistant coach. After his first NFL coaching season, he was promoted to the team's outside linebackers coach, his former position in his career. In 2018, he coached his first player to the Pro Bowl, outside linebacker T.J. Watt.
