The New York Jets' seventeenth season was in 1976, playing their home games at Shea Stadium. During the offseason they hired Lou Holtz to lead the team. Holtz had never previously coached in the NFL in any capacity before the 1976 season. He resigned from the Jets on Sunday, December 12, 1976. They finished the season 3-11-0, 2-5-0 at home and 1-6-0 on the road.
