Career Summary
Frank Coughlin was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) during the 1921 season as the head coach of the Rock Island Independents. During his lone season in the NFL the Independents went 4-2-1. He was the head coach of the Independents for the 1921 season. The Independents went 4-2-1 in this lone season as a head coach. During his career he was a head coach for one season.

One assistant coach from his coaching staffs, Jimmy Conzelman, was eventually hired as a head coach. After coaching on Frank Coughlin's coaching staff, he was the head coach of the Milwaukee Badgers, Rock Island Independents, Milwaukee Badgers, Detroit Panthers, Providence Steam Roller, and Chicago Cardinals for fifteen seasons where he combined for a regular season record of 81-60-16 and 1-1 in the playoffs. His also coached the 1928 Roller and 1947 Cardinals to the NFL championship.
