Biography

Career Summary

Steve Owen was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1931 to 1957, finishing his career as the assistant coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Over his twenty-five years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 158-116-18. He was the head coach of the New York Giants from 1931 until the 1953 season, during which time the Giants went 151-100-17. During his career he was a head coach for twenty-three seasons. During his time leading the Giants the team won the championship in 1934 and 1938.

Owen was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966 after his playing career.

Before he was a head coach, Owen served as an assistant coach for Hugh Devore. He spent two years as an assistant coach to Hugh Devore, finishing as the assistant coach in 1957. During his time as head coach, two assistant coaches, (Ray Flaherty and Allie Sherman) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 137-88-9 in the regular season and 2-7 in the playoffs during their nineteen seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs. The coaching tree has combined for two championships, most recently in 1942 by the Washington Redskins, led by Ray Flaherty.

Owen was born on Thursday, April 21, 1898 in Cleo Springs, Oklahoma. He died on Sunday, May 17, 1964 at the age of 66.
