Playing Career

College Career

University of Kansas Jayhawks

Helm played college football at the University of Kansas from 1964-1966 under head coach Jack Mitchell. During Helm’s seasons playing for the Jayhawks, the team went 7-13-1 in the last three years of Mitchell's coaching tenure.

High School Coaching Career

Shawnee Mission East High School (KS)

After his playing career with Kansas ended, Helm immediately began his coaching career at Shawnee Mission East High School near Kansas City, Missouri. He coached the school from 1967-1968 as an assistant coach.

College Coaching Career

Brigham Young University

After two seasons coaching high school, Helm was hired by Brigham Young University (BYU) and head coach Tommy Hudspeth to coach the freshman football team for the 1969 season. After that season, he moved up to the varsity squad, coaching the running backs and wide receivers for six seasons and also assisting with scouting. He remained in his role under new head coach LaVell Edwards in 1972. During his final season in 1974, the Cougars would make the only bowl appearance of his college coaching career, losing in the Fiesta Bowl.

Professional Coaching Career

Kansas City Chiefs

In 1975, Helm began working in the front office for the Kansas City Chiefs. Starting out as a personnel scout, he worked his way up to the title of Assistant Director of Player Personnel by 1981. In 1982, he restarted his coaching career as the offensive backs coach. In 1983, Helm moved into a general offensive assistant and quality control coach position for several seasons. In 1987, Helm became the Chief’s tight ends coach and held that spot for the final two seasons of his coaching career.
