The Houston Oilers' thirteenth season was in 1972, playing their home games at Reliant Astrodome. During the offseason they hired Bill Peterson to lead the team. Peterson had never previously coached in the NFL in any capacity before the 1972 season. They finished the season 1-13-0, 1-6-0 at home and 0-7-0 on the road.
