The Houston Oilers' nineteenth season was in 1978, and it was the fourth season Bum Phillips served as the head coach of the team. The Oilers played their home games at Reliant Astrodome. They finished the year 10-6-0 in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs, eventually losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-5. At the end of the season Earl Campbell earned AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and AP Offensive Player of the Year.
