The New York Yankees' fourth season was in 1949. During the offseason they promoted Norman "Red" Strader to lead the team. Strader previously was the interim head coach/backfield coach of the New York Yankees and had three years of coaching experience in the AAFC. They finished the regular season 8-4-0 and continued to the postseason. They faced the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs and lost 17-7.
