The New York Giants' seventy-third season was in 1997, playing their home games at Giants Stadium. During the offseason they hired Jim Fassel to lead the team. Fassel previously was the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals and had six years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the year 10-5-1 in the regular season, en route to winning the NFC East, but they lost their first playoff game to the Minnesota Vikings 23-22. At the end of the season, Jim Fassel was awarded with the Coach of the Year award.
