The Detroit Lions' forty-eighth season was in 1977, playing their home games at Pontiac Silverdome. During the offseason they promoted Tommy Hudspeth to lead the team. Hudspeth previously was the interim head coach/scout of the Detroit Lions and had one year of coaching experience in the NFL. He was fired from the Lions on Monday, January 9, 1978. They finished the season 6-8-0, 5-2-0 at home and 1-6-0 on the road.
