The Detroit Lions' forty-ninth season was in 1978, playing their home games at Pontiac Silverdome. During the offseason they hired Monte Clark to lead the team. During his time in the NFL he was head coach for one year. They finished the season 7-9-0, 5-3-0 at home and 2-6-0 on the road. At the end of the season, Al Baker was awarded with the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
