The Detroit Lions' sixtieth season was in 1989, playing their home games at Pontiac Silverdome. During the offseason they promoted Wayne Fontes to lead the team. Fontes previously was the defensive coordinator/secondary coach of the Detroit Lions and had thirteen years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the season 7-9-0, 4-4-0 at home and 3-5-0 on the road. At the end of the season, Barry Sanders was awarded with the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
